Drug Rehab Center Success Story

I am one of those people who society thought the phrase, “once an addict, always an addict” applied to. I have been in and out of jail and drug rehabs since I turned 18. After coming to Narconon Arrowhead's drug rehab center, my mind started changing. Something was different here. Maybe it was the staff or the alternative to the Twelve step approach. Maybe it was my body without toxins from years of self-induced exposure to chemicals. Narconon Arrowhead has changed me. Thanks to this drug rehab program, when someone tells me the old saying, I can proudly correct them. K.D.

Meth Addiction and Addiction

Meth Addiction
The first experience of using meth may involve some pleasure; methamphetamine however begins to destroy the user’s life right from the beginning. This all starts with low intensity use where the individual wants to meth effects to stay away, increase energy, or suppress appetite. It is usually snorted or swallowed. The mental and physical effects are so severe that the use quickly moves into binge use. Binge use usually involved smoking or injecting the meth allowing a stronger faster effect that quickly results in psychological meth addiction. In high intensity use ones whole existence focuses on preventing the inevitable crash following meth use. Tolerance builds up in meth addiction requiring more and more of the drug at closer and closer intervals. Withdrawal can be mentally and physically painful and is often accompanied by severe depression and suicidal ideation.

Opium Addiction and Addiction

Opium Addiction
Opium addiction has a long history. It was a problem in the 1850’s when morphine was developed as a non-addictive substitute. Morphine was soon a bigger addiction problem than opium. The morphine problem was ‘solved’ with another opium derivative – Heroin, which proved to be even more addictive than either morphine or opium. In the middle and latter parts of the 20th century along come methadone as the cure for heroin. You guessed it, methadone is stronger, more addictive, and more life threatening than any of the opium derivatives that came before it. Ask any methadone addict, or addiction professional dealing with methadone addiction and withdrawal. By the 1990’s the mortality rate from opium derivatives was estimated to be 20 times greater than the general population.

Addiction Recovery and Addiction

Addiction Recovery
There are several things necessary in order to affect addiction recovery for a life time. One of these is a drug free withdrawal and full detoxification program. Substitute or maintenance drugs are not a viable long term option. Ask any heroin addict who is now using methadone in addition to heroin, or ask any meth addict who now finds themselves abusing anti-depressants on a regular basis. Using additional drugs does not handle the barriers to continued drug use, but only adds to them. At Narconon Arrowhead most of our participants who have completed the New Life Detoxification Program report and end to cravings, have removed all drugs and toxins from the body, and show a marked resurgence in overall sense of well-being.

Drug Effects and Addiction

Drug Effects
Each drug of course can and does create its own effects. With all the substances available today the list of effects can be staggering. There are common denominators to drug abuse and addiction however. Those who start down the path of addiction begin to accumulate so much damage to their physical and mental selves and their lives that the quality of their lives in general deteriorates. If drug or alcohol abuse continues unchecked, eventually the person is faced with so many unpleasant circumstances that each sober moment is filled with despair and misery. All this person now wants to do is escape these feelings by medicating them away. This is the downward spiral of addiction. For most addicts, there are only three possible outcomes: sobriety, prison or death.
